This is always such a challenging question and the answer often changes. I love the music of composers such as Ravel, Shostakovich and Stravinsky. However my favourite would likely be Mahler, particularly his ninth Symphony. I find the breadth of colour and expression in his music to be so captivating, the variety of character and emotional complexity really draws you in.

In live venues if possible, but really I listen to music all the time while I’m walking, commuting, cooking etc. You’ll rarely find me without my headphones in! I listen to a wide range of genres and particularly like to listen to new music on long train journeys.

I believe that orchestral concerts are a whole sensory experience in which what you see is just as important as what you hear. There are many layers to live performance and I think it is always enjoyable to witness people doing something that they love and are highly skilled at. You are able to see the orchestra communicating not only with the audience but also with each other. To me it seems even more exciting if those sounds are unfamiliar and someone may not know exactly where they come from or how they might work together to create one homogeneous sound.

I love to read books and usually have a couple on the go at once. When I have free time I try to catch up with friends and we’ll likely be found in different cafes around London as I’m an avid coffee drinker. I’m a big musical theatre fan too so love to catch a show in the West End when possible!

I always loved languages and literature in school so I imagine I would have gone on to study one of those if I weren’t a musician. For a while when I was younger I dreamed of being an author, so I’d like to think I would be pursuing that dream.

At the beginning of my master’s studies, the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra performed Mahler’s 2nd Symphony “Resurrection” in the Barbican Hall. Mahler is one of my favourite composers and for years I had wanted to play this symphony, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to explore the character and expression in this music. The concert took place in September 2021, so it was not only my first concert at Guildhall but my first large scale performance since the beginning of the pandemic. To return to this type of performance and play this incredible piece of music to a sold-out hall after so many months of restrictions was a truly overwhelming experience and one I will cherish for a long time.

As a teenager, whenever I wasn’t in orchestra or band rehearsals, I was likely found listening to a variety of rock and punk music. Everyone always seemed to find the juxtaposition with classical flute repertoire entertaining.

I still love rock bands now but my taste has since broadened a bit and I also enjoy listening to indie, folk, jazz, musical theatre and classical music of course.
