Biography
“My dream is to become an Olympic Champion!” – growing up, swimming was a huge part of my life. I trained and competed tirelessly. On the other hand, learning the violin was merely a hobby that my parents encouraged. It wasn’t until joining my secondary school orchestra that my passion for music began to kindle.
I discovered countless possibilities when the sound of my instrument interacted with others in the orchestra. I feasted on classical music during my free time – reading every book and listening to any discs I could get my hands on – and achieved great results after several years of hard work and dedication. With the loving support from my family, I decided to pursue music at the Hong Kong Baptist University, where I got my first taste of being a professional musician.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there were overwhelming restrictions placed everywhere in the world. During that period of isolation, I was fortunate to have a lot of free time to explore different possibilities. As everything was moved online, students from all around the world would share their musical journeys and insights with one another, which I particularly enjoyed. I was exposed to numerous options and I was eager to travel and see the world, thus leading to me studying in the culturally vibrant city of London.
Commencing my postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2022, I am beyond thankful for the generous scholarship sponsored by the Hong Kong Government, and the unfailing support I get from my teacher Prof. Krzysztof Śmietana, where he guided me into maturity as a musician.
I truly believe that music has healing powers – when I cannot find the right words to express myself, music allows me to channel my feelings into my playing, eventually finding comfort. When I perform with others, the cooperative nature of chamber music allows me to understand myself better in different ways, not to mention making lots of life-long friends sharing similar passion! This year, I was invited to join the 97 Ensemble, which is dedicated to championing music by underrepresented composers and making music more accessible to people from different backgrounds through performances and outreaches. It is such a wholesome feeling to witness the joy of my audience after giving my best to perform!
Even though I did not become a competitive swimmer in the end, I still love sport and nature to the bone! During my free time, I often visit the countryside and will always carry my swimsuit with me. As an international student staying abroad, I also love exploring new recipes of different cuisines, hoping to bring freshness to my everyday life.
