Biography
I was 13 when I started learning the double bass at an institute that offered free string instrument classes for children from the local community in Osasco, my hometown in Brazil. Ensemble playing has always been a predominant part of my musical life as the twice-a-week classes were held in string orchestra formation from the very beginning with no individual lessons or practice allowed in the first year. I soon joined the institute’s orchestra with whom I played for four years. We played concerts all around Brazil and South America, as well as in the US and Europe. The experiences and relationships from that time made the decision of pursuing music as a career a very easy one for me. I was very fortunate to be certain of this quite early on while most of my friends really struggled with the decision of what undergraduate degree to apply for. The only question for me was ‘where?’.
Like many young musicians, I had a dream teacher in mind. Prof. Božo Paradžik still is to this day my double bass hero but at the time, moving to Europe and studying with him just seemed out of reach. Nonetheless, in 2013, I applied for the classes he taught every summer in Sion, Switzerland, and to my surprise I was accepted. After a week that seemed more like a dream, Prof. Paradžik approached me to talk about my future plans. He advised me to pursue my undergraduate studies at the RNCM in Manchester, where his former teacher, Prof. Jiří Hudec, had been teaching for a few years. This should also give me time to learn German so that I could eventually go study with Prof. Paradžik in Germany or Switzerland.
Following his advice, I auditioned for the BMus degree at the RNCM and was incredibly fortunate to be awarded an ABRSM Scholarship which covered the full tuition fees as well as living costs in Manchester. Studying in the UK without this award would have been out of question as the tuition fees for overseas students were simply unaffordable for my family. Those six years in Manchester—as a bachelors student and later RNCM Junior Fellow—profoundly impacted me. Prof. Hudec’s guidance, alongside all the opportunities I had at the RNCM, was absolutely fundamental to my development as a musician. Besides, learning to adapt to a new culture as well as being able to easily travel around Europe helped me expand my perspective on so many aspects of life.
In 2020 I finally packed my things and moved to Germany to study my masters degree at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg with Prof. Paradžik. The two years there transformed my double bass playing and taught me how to truly feel comfortable on stage when performing a recital or as soloist. However, wanting to continue learning from him, I applied for a second masters degree, this time in Lucerne, Switzerland. The course was specialised in solo performance and as my final examination I had the incredible opportunity last June (2024) of performing as soloist in front of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in the iconic KKL Concert Hall.
Having now moved back to the UK, I can’t wait for the new challenges ahead and feel very privileged and excited to be part of the Sinfonia Smith Square Fellowship.
