Distinguish yourself among emerging professional musicians by being part of Europe’s most exciting Fellowship orchestra.
Sinfonia Smith Square provides unrivalled opportunities to gain crucial orchestral experience through the following:
Concerts
Sinfonia Smith Square performs in concerts every week. From our home, Smith Square Hall (formerly St John’s Smith Square), to the Royal Festival Hall, Snape Maltings, and Anghiari (Italy), we perform a wide range of music, including repertoire professional orchestras expect you to know, and embrace genres from folk and opera, to Baroque and contemporary.
A variety of musical roles
There’s no fixed seating list in Sinfonia Smith Square. You’ll experience orchestral playing from all seats within your section, learning how to excel when leading and following.
You will also undertake a range of chamber music projects, for which you can recommend repertoire, and audition for a concerto opportunity if you wish.
Leadership
You will develop the leadership skills professional orchestras look for, becoming a confident communicator and negotiator, presenting concerts yourself, plus leading and devising educational projects to inspire younger musicians.
Artist Development
Life as a professional musician is demanding physically and mentally, and our Artist Development programme will prepare you for a sustainable career in music.
From setting personal objectives to crafting your CV and planning your next steps, you will have regular meetings with our Artist Development Manager.
There will also be the opportunity to undertake mock auditions and masterclasses to gain valuable feedback from professional musicians.
Collaborations
We work with the greatest names in the industry. Guest artists have included Edward Gardner, John Wilson, Guy Barker, Sarah Connolly, Nicola Benedetti, and Alessio Bax.
Sinfonia Smith Square also performs side-by-side with the world’s leading orchestral musicians from organisations including the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.
On tour
Each year, Sinfonia Smith Square provides a week-long festival of symphonic and chamber music in the historic town of Anghiari. Nestled in the Tuscan countryside, it is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
