On 17th February 2025, we held a panel on intersectionality in classical music, highlighting structural inequities, underrepresentation, and the need for institutional change.
Panellists included:
- Roger Wilson, co-founder of Black Lives in Music, a collective of professionals addressing the current inequality of opportunity for Black, Asian and Ethnically Diverse people aspiring to be artists or professionals in the Jazz and Classical music industry
- Esta Rae, Events Manager, neurodiversity advocate, and Trustee of Attitude is Everything, an organisation connecting disabled people with music and live event industries to improve access together
- Beibei Wang, percussionist and musician with Gender and the Large Shiny Instruments, an initiative to address gender imbalances for instrumentalists (and advocate for large instruments that have not traditionally been viewed as ‘feminine’ choices in recent historical times)
- Gennie Joy, music education consultant & Sinfonia Smith Square Trustee
- Benjamin Collyer, organist in Sinfonia Smith Square
Below, we summarise and dissect some of the key points from that panel.
