Old and new, avant-garde and pop, orchestra and band: all meet in this hour-long lunchtime concert.
Avant-garde composer Luciano Berio’s ecstatic arrangements of some of the Beatles’ greatest hits, including Michelle, Ticket to Ride, and Yesterday, form the centrepiece of this programme, surrounded by works from John McCabe and Maurice Ravel.
Despite intial appearances, the Beatles and Berio have quite a bit in common, and openly shared a mutual admiration for each other’s work – just listen to Revolution 9 and the third movement of Berio’s Sinfonia back to back.
