Cathal Garvey conducts the Salomon Orchestra in this all-English programme.

Walton’s Orb & Sceptre was written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and first performed (not so far away!) at the ceremony in Westminster Abbey in 1953.  International soloist and critically-acclaimed concertmaster of Sinfonia of London, Charlie Lovell-Jones is the soloist in Britten’s Violin Concerto. Written in 1938-1939, whilst Britten was living in the United States, and was dedicated to Henry Boys, Britten’s former teacher at the Royal College of Music. Vaughan William’s Pastoral Symphony (later numbered as No. 3) was completed in 1922, and is frequently viewed as a subtly beautiful elegy for the dead of World War I, and a meditation on the sounds of peace.
