Biography
I was born and raised in Zaporizhzhia, a city in south-eastern Ukraine that stretches for several miles along the picturesque Dnieper river. I began my musical studies playing the Ukrainian flute and saxophone; when I was about 12 years old, I switched to the bassoon and have never regretted it since.
However, I have never meant to be a musician. Just like any ordinary kid, I would explore the outdoors with friends, playing games and having fun. In addition, I grew a passion for karate, football and parcour, and devoted all my time to mastering these sports. Playing music was never a thought for me. It all started with my transition from primary to secondary school, which marked the beginning of my musical journey. Music was one of the after-school activities offered at my new school, and I decided to give it a try. In less than a year of studying, I was already playing in a school jazz band, performing at community events, and competing in music contests. After a while, I succeeded in auditioning for the first-ever Young Symphony Orchestra in my city. It was at this point that I decided to experiment with the bassoon and developed a deep affection for this instrument.
I took my Bachelor’s degree at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv and then started my Masters programme with renowned bassoon tutor Yurii Dondakov as my supervisor. From 2020 to 2022, I worked as Principal Bassoon at the Kyiv Opera, whilst still a conservatoire student. Everything changed overnight when Russia invaded Ukraine. I had to flee my country for safety and in order to complete my disrupted studies in the UK. I joined the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to pursue MMus degree in music performance. I was chosen for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Training Scheme during my time as a Master’s student at the RBC, and in my final year, I played with the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra as part of my professional placement module. My greatest achievement thus far has been performing alongside my teacher and CBSO Bassoon Section Leader Nikolaj Henriques, as part of the Birmingham city’s orchestra.
Apart from playing music, I enjoy weightlifting, bodybuilding, learning Italian, travelling, getting to know people from different cultures, and any activities that involve exercise mixed with fun.
